La Educación con Raíces de la Familia

Sponsored by the California Community FoundationLa educación con raíces de la familia provides classes in Spanish to parents whose children are learning to read and write in English, creating awareness of the richness of the home culture, and how to draw upon that to support two-language elementary-age children in school.

As of this writing, we are in our second round of classes, having already graduated 10 parents on January 30, 2013.  To allow parents to participate, we not only provide instruction in Spanish, but child care, transportation, food and coffee.

The second round of classes began February 20 and will continue until May 1, 2013.  All classes, material, and child care are free.

Advanced Organizing Institute

The California Endowment has funded Centro Shalom's Advanced Organizing Institute to train community organizers to assist and support the Endowment in its Building Healthy Communities Initiative.

The ultimate goal of the Organizing Institute is to have experienced, professional community organizers train a group of twenty to thirty young adults, ages 18-35, to develop the tools and commit to changing systems and policies towards building a healthy community in Long Beach. The participants will serve internships and receive mentorship from collaborating organizations during their five month training from June to October 2013. After graduation, the most promising organizers may have the opportunity to receive a stipend to engage their organizing work in partnership with a community organization or independently toward their goals of building a healthy community in Long Beach.

  • For organizations, the Institute is an opportunity to have your current or future organizers trained for free in strategic planning and other essentials for the organizer's toolbox.
  • For student participants, it is an opportunity to become educated on the major issues impacting Long Beach residents, learn advanced organizing skills, and build a strong network of fellow organizers.

Six of our graduates from the class of 2012 have received funding from the Institute to organize full-time with qualifying nonprofits, and we are actively seeking funding to provide the same opportunity to the class of 2013.
